Developing the Next Generation

Once again, the Men of Honor will be awarding scholarships this year. In four years, we have distributed over $11,000 in scholarship money.
We are looking to assist young men of Northeast Ohio in their pursuit of higher learning, be that in a university, technical, or trade school. Special consideration will be given to young men raised in a single-parent household and those facing financial hurdles. Other considerations include past school performance, awards and achievements, extracurricular activities, volunteerism and community service, and membership in groups and organizations.
The Men of Honor Foundation will be awarding scholarships for the school year 2025-2026. Any young man interested in applying, please do so by 6/1/25.
Upon review of all applications, the Men of Honor Scholarship Committee will conduct applicant interviews, designate scholarship winner(s), and determine the allocation of scholarship funds.

Men of Honor in History

This month we honor: Master Sergeant Ernest Kouma
Master Sergeant Ernest R. Kouma was a highly decorated U.S. Army soldier renowned for his bravery during the Korean War. Born on November 23, 1919, in Dwight, Nebraska, he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1940, serving in both World War II and the Korean War. His military career spanned over three decades, during which he became known for his leadership and valor in combat.
During World War II, Kouma served in the Pacific Theater, where he gained valuable combat experience. However, his most famous act of heroism occurred on August 31, 1950, during the Korean War at the Battle of Nakdong River. As a tank commander with Company A, 72nd Tank Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division, he and his crew were assigned to support a defensive position near Agok, South Korea. When a large North Korean force of 500 soldiers launched an assault, Kouma fought relentlessly from his tank, even after it was disabled. Armed with a .50 caliber machine gun, he singlehandedly held off the enemy for over nine hours, covering the retreat of American forces. Despite being wounded multiple times, he killed an estimated 250 enemy soldiers before withdrawing under his own power. His actions were pivotal in preventing a breakthrough along the Pusan Perimeter, a critical defensive line.
For his incredible bravery, Kouma was awarded the Medal of Honor on May 19, 1951, by President Harry S. Truman. He continued his military service, reaching the rank of Master Sergeant before retiring in 1971. Throughout his career, he also received the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart for his dedication and sacrifice.
After retirement, he remained involved with military organizations and was respected as a war hero. He passed away on December 19, 1993, at the age of 74. His legacy endures as an example of extraordinary courage and selfless service in the U.S. Army.

Health and Wellness

Peptides for Men: The Key to Faster Recovery & Peak Wellness
Peptides, discovered in the early 20th century through research into protein structures, have evolved from a scientific curiosity to a cornerstone of modern wellness. Initially identified as amino acid chains by chemists like Emil Fischer, their potential unfolded with advancements in biotechnology, revealing roles in hormone regulation and tissue repair. Today, peptides are surging in popularity among men seeking natural, effective ways to enhance health and performance, driven by their precision and minimal side effects compared to traditional supplements.
Specific peptides like BPC-157 accelerate injury recovery by promoting tissue regeneration, perfect for active lifestyles or post-workout healing. CJC-1295 and Ipamorelin stimulate growth hormone release, boosting muscle growth, fat loss, and sleep quality—vital for energy and vitality. Collagen peptides strengthen joints, tendons, and skin, countering aging or heavy lifting wear. Tesamorelin targets visceral fat, refining physique, while Sermorelin enhances protein synthesis for lean muscle and hormonal balance. These peptides indirectly support testosterone, improving libido and stamina. With tailored benefits and growing research, peptides empower men to optimize physical performance, recovery, and longevity. Their rise reflects a shift toward science-backed, personalized health solutions—though professional guidance is essential for safe use.

Emergency Preparation

These 10 Common Medications Can Help You Weather an Emergency
In an emergency—whether a natural disaster, prolonged outage, or sudden isolation—stocking key over-the-counter (OTC) medications can be a game-changer. Here’s a list of 10 essentials and why they matter when help is out of reach:
Acetaminophen (Tylenol) - Relieves pain and fever from injuries or sudden illness.
Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) - Tackles pain, inflammation, and fever, versatile for sprains or colds.
Aspirin - Eases pain and, in a pinch, may aid heart attack response (with medical advice).
Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) - Counters allergic reactions, critical if food or stings trigger swelling.
Loperamide (Imodium) - Stops diarrhea, preventing dehydration when sanitation fails.
Ranitidine or Famotidine (Zantac, Pepcid) - Soothes heartburn, vital under stress or odd diets.
Hydrocortisone Cream - Calms rashes or bites, common in disrupted hygiene.
Pseudoephedrine (Sudafed) - Clears congestion, a relief in cramped, stuffy conditions.
Loratadine (Claritin) - Manages allergies without drowsiness, keeping you alert.
Triple Antibiotic Ointment (Neosporin) - Prevents infection in cuts when first aid is your only option.
These meds address immediate needs when pharmacies close or roads are blocked. Acetaminophen and ibuprofen handle everyday aches, while aspirin offers a dual-purpose edge. Diphenhydramine and loratadine cover allergies—vital if supplies introduce unexpected triggers. Loperamide fights dehydration risks, and ranitidine/famotidine ease digestive woes from irregular meals. Hydrocortisone and antibiotic ointment protect against skin issues turning serious, while pseudoephedrine keeps breathing easy. Stocked smartly—rotated for freshness, stored cool and dry—they’re a buffer against chaos, buying time until normalcy returns.
